Having an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is an exciting and fun way to ride anywhere you want. However, if you don’t use it for several months, you may find that it will not start. This could be as simple as a depleted battery or a more serious issue, such as a faulty ATV starter or alternator. Either way, you will likely need to jump-start the vehicle so that you can get the necessary repairs. Below are several ways to ensure you perform this safely.

How Do You Jump-Start an ATV?

1. Pop the Clutch

Normally, you'd turn the key, which engages the ATV starter and cranks the engine. However, when this doesn't work, you can use gravity to crank the engine. While it's in neutral, push the machine to the top of a small hill or slope. Place the vehicle in first gear, turn the key, engage the clutch, and get it rolling.

Once it's moving, hop aboard and release the clutch. The engine should make a sound that is similar to pulling the cord of a chainsaw, before revving to life. However, make sure there are no obstacles or obstructions in your path before doing this.

2. Use Another Vehicle

Start the engine of the operational vehicle, and connect the black terminal on the battery of the running engine to the black terminal of the dead one. These are the negative terminals, and you should always connect them first.

Then connect the red terminals to complete the circuit and allow electricity to flow. If using a car, do not start the charging vehicle. Leave the circuit in place for at least five minutes before turning the ignition of the ATV. The engine should start. If it tries to turn over but cannot, let it charge more before trying again.

3. Try a Battery Pack

A battery pack is a portable energy cell with built-in jumper cables. You must charge it ahead of time by plugging it into a wall outlet. To use it, connect the black cord to the negative terminal of the dead battery, then connect the red cord to the positive terminal.

While this is similar to using another vehicle, you can attempt to start the engine right away. If this doesn’t work, the issue likely lies with the ATV starter, and you will need to replace it.
