As the summer months come to an end, you’ll likely start planning your fall landscaping and shopping for garden supplies. If you’re unsure of what to grow, there are several trees, plants, and flowers that favor cooler, milder conditions and will remain beautiful before going dormant after the first frost. Below are a few ideas about what to plant this fall.

4 Plants That Are Perfect for Fall Weather

1. Annuals

Pansies, violas, asters, and sunflowers provide lovely cool season color. Ornamental peppers are colorful that stand in upright clusters that can be used as bedding plants or in pots so you can enjoy them on a deck or patio.

Crotons also feature magnificent yellow and orange leaves and remain in bloom until the first frost. Plant them in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and allow about 12 inches between flowers so that the roots can spread.

2. Perennials

3. Trees

August through October is an excellent time to plant trees because the cool temperatures prevent heat damage and fall moisture will nourish the root systems. Trees that thrive particularly well in Ohio during autumn include black gum, scarlet oak, and dogwood. This is because they are strong, robust varieties that won’t die when winter sets in, even while young.

4. Grass

Dead or bald patches often develop in yards due to excess heat and sun exposure in summer, so fill in these spots during early fall. Match your grass by looking at the shape and color of the blades. For example, bluegrass is long and narrow, and ranges from emerald to blue-green. Fescue is medium-green and clumpy with wider blades. After planting, use a spreader to evenly distribute a nitrogen-based fertilizer to ensure healthy growth throughout winter.

5. Cole Crops

Cole crops are hardy, cool weather vegetables that are perfect for early fall gardens. Some include brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. For best results, cole crops should be grown in full sun, but due to their need for cooler temperatures, if you have a partially shaded garden, the vegetables in this family will do okay here as well. Growing cole crops allows you to enjoy fresh vegetables, even in the cooler months.
