A wedding involves having all of your friends and loved ones around you to celebrate your big day, although deciding who to invite is often a challenge. Before selecting a wedding venue, here are some tips to help you put together the guest list.

How to Create a Wedding Guest List

1. Write a Comprehensive List

First, create a complete list with no boundaries; ignore budget, location, convenience, and venue capacity. Write down every person you and your soon-to-be spouse can think of to invite. This will lay the foundation for you to trim.

2. Know the Wedding Venue Capacity

You can also explore larger venues if you know your guest list will exceed a given capacity.

3. Cut Based on Existing Relations

Start trimming the list based on rules about your relationship with the person. First, create your A-list of family members and the wedding party that will attend.

Ask yourself when you last spoke to a prospective guest. If it’s been over a year and they aren’t related to you, you can put them in the B-list.

If you don’t want children at the wedding, remove potential guests who would insist on bringing theirs.

Think about travel as well if you’re doing a destination wedding. Not all guests will be willing or able to travel for the wedding, so expect fewer people to attend.

As you remove people, organize them in a B-list. You can then apply your same cutting rules to trim that list. Should an A-list guest cancel, you can move a B-list guest to their place.
