Your septic system protects your health, water quality, and the environment by treating and distributing the waste your household produces. Here are some do’s and don’ts to follow to ensure your septic system operates smoothly for years to come.

Do:

Perform regular maintenance.

Routine cleaning and maintenance will maximize the life span of your septic system. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years to clear out sludge from the bottom.

Conserve water.

Too much water in your septic system can cause it to back up and inhibit the bacteria in the tank that break down waste.

septic systemSave water by promptly repairing any leaks and upgrading to low-flow plumbing fixtures. Spread out laundry loads throughout the week. Avoid running multiple water sources simultaneously, like dishwashers and showers.

Outdoors, avoid using water-loving plants and trees, and never construct ponds or other water features on or near the septic tank or drainfield.

Don’t:

Alter the ground surface over the drainfield.

The drainfield receives wastewater from the tank, and it shouldn’t be blocked by anything overhead. Don't plant a vegetable garden there or put down plastic sheets, bark, gravel, or other fill. Never park or drive over the system’s parts.

Additionally, keep other heavy items like carports and storage sheds off these areas to avoid compacting the soil and breaking the pipes.

Ornamental grasses, wildflower mixes, and other plants with shallow root systems can be planted over the septic tank and drainfield. Minor modifications like the addition of topsoil are acceptable as long as they don’t exceed a few inches in depth. Keep in mind that anything you plant may be removed during septic repairs.

Flush anything down the drains other than toilet tissue.

Flushing anything other than toilet paper, including paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and sanitary wipes, is likely to cause blockages in a septic tank.

Also, don’t use excessive amounts of harsh household chemicals because they can kill the tank’s bacteria. Avoid using a garbage disposal if you have one, as food debris can clog the system.
