A clogged drain will prevent wastewater from effectively flowing through pipes, which will, in turn, cause septic system issues. You may notice slow drains, foul odors, and, in extreme cases, overflowing fixtures and water damage. To prevent septic system problems, teach every member of the household how to handle everyday items that can clog drains.

A Guide to Common Causes of Clogged Drains

1. Grease

Liquid grease will stick to the inside of pipes and solidify as it cools. While grease from meats is one of the more frequent sources of clogged drains, all types pose a threat, including cooking oils, butter, and salad dressings. Plus, these clogs are extremely sticky and will attract more debris the longer they sit in a drain, ultimately growing in size.

To avoid clogs and septic system issues, never pour grease of any kind down the drain. Pour it into a pan or thick glass jar, wait until it cools, and dispose of it in the trash.

2. Coffee Grounds

Even if you give your coffee filter a tap into the garbage can to clear it out before rinsing, the leftover grounds stuck to the sides will still go down the drain. These tiny particles don't break down in water; instead, they clump together and stick to the inside of pipes, resulting in stubborn clogs.

Avoid pouring grounds down the drain by emptying the filter into the garbage, then wiping it with a damp paper towel.

3. Soap

septic systemOver time, residue from soaps, shampoos, and dish detergent will accumulate inside drains until they block the flow of water. Since there's no way to effectively prevent soap from going down the drain, maintenance is essential here. Have a plumbing or septic professional come by annually to clear out your drains.
