Although stone walkways add a unique and stylish touch to any yard, these surfaces can collect dirt and grime, diminishing the home’s curb appeal. While chemical cleansers effectively clear away debris, many contain elements that are harmful to soil, grass, and plants. To avoid endangering your landscape, use these tips to spruce your stepping stones, and protect the surrounding lawn.

How to Clean Stepping Stones Without Damaging Your Lawn

1. Sweep Away Debris

Dirt, leaves, twigs, and sand can stain the stone, so remove loose debris weekly. Use a broom or blower to clear away these contaminants. If you’re worried about the debris tainting the grass, sweep it into a dustpan.

2. Use a Pressure Washer

3. Scrub With a Nontoxic Cleanser

When stains, mold, and debris can’t be removed with a pressure washer, scrub the stone with a small amount of mild, nontoxic cleaner that’s safe for plants. Oxygenated bleach mixed with water can loosen stubborn debris without contaminating the soil. Use a nylon brush to avoid scratching the walkway’s surface.

4. Seal the Surface

Sealers should be applied several times a year to shield the stone from dirt, staining, weathering, and UV damage. Once your stone walkway is dry from cleaning, brush on a thin coat of a sealing product. Let the coat dry, and repeat the process four or five more times. Apply the sealer in crevices, including in imprinted designs, where dirt typically collects.
