New computers deliver fast speeds that make your laptop easy and smooth to operate. But over time, users will need to save files, download data, and utilize more and more programs that require greater amounts of memory and storage space. As a result, your laptop may start to slow down. Fortunately, there are some ways to restore speed and function and turn your laptop into a new computer—or close to it.

How to Speed Up a Slow Laptop

1. Reduce Automatic Startup Tasks

Whenever a person starts up their laptop, whether it is a new computer or one they've had for years, several programs will automatically begin running. You probably don't need a lot of these programs; at a minimum, you likely don't need all of them to automatically start with the computer.

For Windows users, go to the Task Manager, open your Settings, and click on Startup; from there, you can see which programs automatically run and how much impact they have. Right-click and choose Disable on any programs not needed at startup.

Mac users can right-click on the app and hover over Options. Tap the checkmark next to Open at Login to uncheck and disable the app.

2. Empty the Recycle Bin/Trash Weekly

new computersMany laptop users assume that once they delete a file, it's spontaneously gone forever. But all files go to the Recycle Bin or Trash, where they sit until the folder is emptied. And you must do the emptying yourself.

As long as the files reside in the Recycle Bin/Trash, they will take up precious storage space that slows your laptop. On a weekly basis, get in the habit of going to the Recycle Bin, clicking CTRL + A to Select All items, and hit Delete to empty. For Mac users, choose Empty Trash under the Finder menu.

3. Uninstall Applications You Don't Need

There could be unneeded or unused apps with heavy storage demands consuming space on your laptop. Window users can open the Control Panel to see a list of all installed apps; right-click on the ones no longer in your regular rotation and click Uninstall.

Mac users should click the Finder icon in the Dock and click on Applications in the Finder sidebar. For apps in folders, open the folder and the Uninstaller inside. From apps not in folders, drag the application icon from Applications to the Trash.
