Eating can sometimes be challenging for kids and teens who wear braces. A dentist may advise you to avoid feeding them certain foods during the course of their treatment, such as popcorn and pretzels. If you’re planning a Thanksgiving meal or attending a gathering for the holiday, you might be concerned about what children can comfortably eat. Here are some suggestions to ensure they enjoy every bite without any trouble.

How Kids With Braces Can Enjoy Thanksgiving Food

1. Cut Meat First

If the meal includes turkey or ham, make it easier for kids to eat by urging them to cut it into smaller, more digestible pieces. They should avoid eating it directly off of the bone to prevent damage to their braces.

If a child prefers vegetarian products, like soy-based turkey, be mindful of the consistency. It can also be cut the same way, and adding some gravy to any of these foods will also soften them considerably.

2. Try Soft Sides

bracesSide dishes make Thanksgiving meals memorable. Many of these softer food items are the best choices for your hungry child. Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, steamed vegetables, cornbread, stuffing, and cranberry sauce are all great dishes that won’t have a negative effect on their teeth. Avoid raw vegetables and corn on the cob since they can be very difficult to chew with braces.

3. Don’t Avoid Sweets

It wouldn’t be a proper Thanksgiving holiday without a serving or two of pie. Don’t deprive kids of their favorite treats just because of braces. Make sure, however, to stick with softer desserts like apple pie, pumpkin pie, and sweet potato pie. Steer clear of anything that contains nuts or sticky ingredients, such as caramel. These can be difficult to remove from the metal.
