Most people don’t think of their car keys until they’re lost or broken. If this happens, a mobile auto locksmith will replace the key so you can access your vehicle once again. The type of service you receive depends on the product you have, as explained here.

How Does My Car Key Work?

1. Mechanically Cut

While these keys were standard for many years, they are less common in newer vehicles.

They are cut into specific designs to match the locking system of different cars. When the grooves on the key engage the inner mechanism, the door unlocks. Duplicators at hardware stores and mobile auto locksmiths can easily create these keys.

2. Laser-Cut

Configuration is the primary difference between mechanically cut and laser-cut keys. Mechanically cut units feature lines and ridges on a single side, while laser-cut varieties have lines and ridges on both sides.

A key with many ridges is more difficult to duplicate, ensuring greater security. Mobile auto locksmiths use specialized cutting machines to create these keys.

3. Transponder

The key must not only be laser-cut to match the locking mechanism, but must also be programmed correctly to provide access. Locksmiths have machines that have unique codes from auto manufacturers to program these keys.

4. Smart

Smart keys provide remote access to vehicles, including remote ignition. They’re considered the most secure option since they can only be duplicated and programmed by auto dealerships or locksmiths with the right equipment.

Proximity fobs work similarly, but are usually paired with traditional keys to provide multiple methods of access. This is a helpful feature when the battery in your fob dies and needs replacement
