When you start a car, the ignition sends an electrical impulse to the starter solenoid. The solenoid uses that electricity to generate a magnetic field and move a larger switch, enabling a powerful electrical current to start the vehicle. When this switch isn’t working correctly, you cannot drive the car. Below are several issues you may experience if the solenoid is not functional.

How to Tell if Your Starter Solenoid Is Faulty

1. Rapid Clicking

When the solenoid is working correctly, you will hear a slight click before the engine engages, as this is the sound of the switch flipping to turn on. However, if you hear multiple clicks, the solenoid is trying to engage but cannot do so, usually because the electrical current isn’t strong enough.

Without enough energy, it cannot generate the necessary magnetic field. This typically happens when parts begin to corrode. However, it can also happen if metal components overheat and fuse together, which is costly to repair.

2. No Rotation

starterIf you turn the key and you don’t hear anything at all, there are several possible issues. For example, if you have a dead battery, there is likely no current reaching the solenoid. On the other hand, if the solenoid clicks and moves slightly, but doesn’t engage fully, something is impeding the electrical current. This could be due to corrosion on the terminals of your battery or loose components that are not completing the circuit.

3. Mistimed Rotation

When you turn the key, the starter should engage immediately and then disengage when the engine is running. However, it can sometimes keep turning if the contacts fuse together, sending a high-powered electrical current through the system. This is dangerous as it can force the engine to keep running when you try to shut it off. Sometimes, this damage can even make the vehicle start spontaneously, without turning the key at all.
