Whether due to injury, tooth decay, gum disease, or another reason, you may want a set of custom-made dentures. However, it is a big step, and many people are reluctant to make the change. To help you make the switch as smoothly as possible, here are some tips for living with artificial teeth.

3 Tips to Help You Get Used to Dentures

1. Be Patient

The new appliance will feel strange in your mouth at first. It could take a few weeks before you feel comfortable talking or eating while wearing it. You may experience excess saliva and find yourself swallowing frequently. Be patient. This beginning period is only temporary, and, as with any significant change, it takes a while for you to get used to it. You will adjust to the appliance’s presence during meals and when speaking, and soon you will even forget you have it in.

2. Brush Twice Daily

denturesBrush your dentures as you would your own teeth—or even more carefully. Clean them twice a day to remove plaque. Floss them daily to remove particles between the teeth, and rinse thoroughly to prevent staining. Brush your gums, as well, using a soft-bristled brush. This stimulates blood flow, keeps the gums healthy, removes bacteria, and helps keep your breath smelling fresh. Brushing the appliance and your gums each day helps them look and feel their best.

3. Store Them in Water

Do not let your artificial teeth dry out. If they do, they can crack or lose their shape and again leave you with a smile that makes you self-conscious. When you take them out for an extended period, such as to sleep, store them in a glass of water or an appropriate cleaning solution. Make sure the water is room temperature or cooler; hot water can cause them to warp. However, if your plate contains metal attachments that could tarnish in water or cleanser, discuss proper care techniques with your dentist.
