Homeowners are surprised to discover ice on their AC units, especially during summer. Even stranger, the system is often blowing only warm air. It’s a common HVAC issue, and there are several causes. Use the following guide to protect your system and recognize when you need AC repairs.

Poor Airflow

Your air conditioner relies on evaporator coils to cool incoming warm air. The only reason these coils don’t freeze is because warm air is continuously passing over. They freeze when there’s an obstruction. You’ll notice a thick coat of ice quickly forms on your unit and should turn the thermostat to OFF.

First, check all your air filters. Clogged filters obstruct airflow and should be replaced. Make sure vents aren’t closed or blocked either. If possible, check visible ductwork. Collapsed areas may be hindering airflow. There may also be dirt on the evaporator coils or electrical issues with the blowers.

It’s recommended to schedule a yearly inspection to prevent the need for AC repairs. A technician will carefully check the blower and electrical components, lubricate parts, and test the thermostat. They’ll address the first signs of problems and ensure you get reliable use from your system.

Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant is a chemical circulating in your AC unit. It captures heat from the air in your home and disperses it outside. Units freeze when the refrigerant is low because not enough warmth is circulating and released outside.

Refrigerant won’t get used up, so the only cause is a leak. Aside from ice, you’ll notice inadequate cooling, higher humidity levels in your home, and bubbling and hissing sounds.

Turn your system off and contact an AC repair professional. Refrigerant is poisonous and tricky to handle, which is why it’s not a DIY job.

The technician will repair the perforated coil and restock the refrigerant. Your system should perform as expected once the ice thaws. Prevent this issue by keeping three feet of clear space around your unit so foliage and other items can’t grow inside it and damage the parts.
