Now that fall is here, you’re probably thinking about having your winter tires put on and storing your summer tires for the season. Unless you want to have to buy new tires in the spring because your old ones have become cracked, dried out, or damaged beyond repair over the winter, you need to store them properly. Here’s how to keep them in excellent shape.

How to Store Your Tires

1. Clean Before Storing

Before putting your summer tires away for the winter, scrub them to remove as much dirt, brake dust, and road grime as possible. This will prevent friction on the rubber that causes excess wear.

Allow them to dry completely before placing them in individual plastic bags to protect from dust while in storage. Remove as much air from the bags as possible before sealing them.

2. Store Tires Vertically

Using storage bags can prevent color transfer between tires. However, if you aren’t using bags, store them black side to black side and white side to white side to eliminate staining.

3. Store in a Cool, Dry Space

Don’t store your summer tires outside where they can be exposed to the elements, like extreme temperatures and sunlight. This is detrimental to the rubber and can cause them to become dry and brittle, which means you’ll need new tires in the spring.

Whenever possible, select a temperature-controlled location that has relatively stable humidity. Unless you have a heated garage or shed, your basement is likely to be the best option for safe storage.
