Whether you’re building a patio or paving a walkway, you have several decisions to make regarding the feature’s materials. The ready-mixed concrete will influence the appearance and longevity of the installation. If you’re unfamiliar with this material, here’s what to consider before placing your order.

What to Think About Before Buying Ready-Mixed Concrete

1. Grade

The material’s grade is determined by its strength and composition. Measured in megapascals, or MPa, higher grades can withstand more pounds per square inch, or PSI. For example, concrete with an M5 grade has a compressive strength of 5 MPa, which means it can withstand 725 psi.

An M70 grade has a compressive strength of 70 MPa and can withstand 10,150 psi. M10 is usually adequate for patio slabs and walkways, but you’ll need at least M30 for driveways.

2. Source

concreteReady-mixed concrete is comprised of aggregates, admixture, cement, and water. The source of each of these ingredients will determine the material’s overall quality. A reputable supplier will be transparent about their sources, which you can then research to confirm the quality of the ingredients they use.

3. Amount

Before you can place an order, you must determine precisely how much your project demands. Ready-mixed concrete is usually measured in cubic yards.

Take an accurate measurement of the space you need to fill, and then ask your supplier how much they recommend to complete the job. Many websites have concrete calculators to help you determine the correct amount. Always order slightly more (roughly 5-10%) than the calculated number to guarantee you have enough.
