A gravel path adds character to your backyard and lets you travel across your lawn without damaging your landscaping. It’s also simple to install as long as you have the right materials and equipment. Here are the steps to follow to add this feature to your property.

How to Create a Backyard Gravel Path

1. Mark the Path’s Shape

Examine your lawn to determine where you’d like the path to start and end. Then, delineate your preferred shape using garden hoses, ropes, or spray paint. Use a measuring tape to find the path’s width, and make sure it’s consistent from the beginning to the end.

2. Dig Out the Trench

gravelUse a square-point shovel to dig along the delineated boundary lines to a depth of about 4 inches. Then, use a round-point shovel to dig out the rest of the soil to the same depth. Compact the bottom of the trench using a steel rake followed by a hand tamper.

3. Add Landscaping Fabric

Landscaping fabric will prevent weeds from growing on the path. Roll a layer of it, shiny side up, onto the dug-out trench. To accommodate any curves in the path, use a sharp utility knife to cut both the inside and outside edges of the fabric.

4. Install Edging

When you walk across the path or if it rains, the gravel may scatter across your lawn. Prevent this situation by adding plastic, 5-inch tall edging to both sides of the path.

Make sure the rounded top sticks up enough to keep the stones in place. Add metal edging stakes every few feet to secure the edging to the ground.

5. Pour the Gravel

Finally, pour about 4 inches of gravel onto the landscaping fabric. It should end up about ½-inch below the top of the edging. Make the surface even with a rake and hand tamper.
