When it comes to roach control, professionals will start by inspecting your property and asking questions about the critters you've seen. To help your exterminator determine the best course of action, it's helpful to know how to identify which cockroaches are in your home. Learn more about some species typically found in the North Carolina area below.

Cockroaches You May Find in Your Home

1. American

Roach control companies often field calls about the American cockroach, as they're the biggest species known to invade homes. These bugs are reddish-brown and can grow up to 3 inches long. They also have long wings, and both males and females can fly. These bugs prefer warm, humid environments, such as those found in the southern part of the country.

2. German

These winged bugs rarely fly and instead will scurry away quickly or squeeze their bodies into tight spaces to hide. This species is most likely to be found in your food pantry.

3. Brown-Banded

Brown-banded roaches are named for their distinct appearance. They're generally brown with intricate banding patterns across their wings. This species usually grows to about half an inch long, and while males are excellent flyers, females have shorter, stouter frames that make them incapable of flight. This type of roach is most likely found in dead trees and stumps, so it's best to keep wood stacks away from the home to prevent an infestation.
