Root canal therapy is a standard dental care procedure to save severely infected teeth. A dentist has to deep clean the chambers inside the tooth, and you’ll want to prepare properly. Below are important guidelines to follow to ensure your comfort and the best outcome from the treatment.

How to Prepare for a Root Canal Treatment

1. Eat a Healthy Meal

Enjoy a healthy meal several hours before your surgery. Local anesthesia may cause nausea on an empty stomach, and it will be challenging to eat following the surgery. Choose healthy foods that will boost your immune system.

Broccoli sauteed in garlic and Greek yogurt are all packed with nutrients to help your body recover after the treatment. Avoid sour, gummy candies, soda, and citrus. These can irritate gum tissue and cause inflammation that interferes with surgery.

2. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

3. Avoid Tobacco & Alcohol

Tobacco and alcohol often contribute to root canal infections and can also inflame your gums. They can both reduce immune system function, so avoid them for at least 24 hours before your surgery. Plan on avoiding each for at least 24 hours after your surgery as well so they don’t compromise recovery or cause an infection.

4. Secure a Ride

Patients may experience a lot of discomfort immediately after the procedure, so ask a friend or family member to give you a ride home. Even local anesthesia can have lingering side effects like drowsiness, which is why it’s always best to play it safe.
