Moving is an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. But before you can get settled into your new abode, you’ll need to transfer all of your belongings. Choosing the right moving boxes can make the process much easier. Here’s how to go about it. 

Size

Moving boxes come in a variety of sizes with various weight capacities. The most common size measures 1.5 cubic feet and can carry up to 60 pounds. However, it’s best to try to keep all box weights under 50 pounds when packed for safety purposes.

The standard box size works best for general items, such as kitchenware, books, fragile miscellaneous objects, small appliances, and lamps.

Alternate sizes include 3, 4.5, 6, and 6.1 cubic feet. This last option is rectangular and is usually best for blankets, cushions, pillows, and comforters.

Other Considerations 

You’ll also want to consider the material. While cardboard is the most common, it’s not ideal for all situations. You may, for instance, need to put some items in a storage unit if you are downsizing and lack storage space or need a place to stow some belongings while you transition temporarily.

Consider the weight of the items you’re packing as well. For particularly heavy loads, it may be best to use crates made of plastic or wood because cardboard can fall apart at the seams under too much pressure or weight. 

Think about the types of items you’re packing. For clothes, a wardrobe box might be better than a standard cubic box, which requires contents to be rolled up or folded.

For paintings, framed photos, and mirrors, consider getting boxes designed specifically for these items as they will fit better and reduce the risk of damage. For mattresses, you can get a mattress box or, better yet, use a mattress bag, which is less expensive and easier to handle.
