toothache is often a sign of an underlying problem, like decay or gingivitis. Since this issue can appear gradually, you may not notice the increasing discomfort. However, don’t ignore any oral pain you’re feeling, as the problem will only worsen. Instead, schedule an appointment with a dentist and use the following tips to alleviate the discomfort at home.

Do:

Apply ice.

Place an ice pack on the side of your mouth that’s aching. The cold temperature will relieve any swelling and numb the area to help with the pain. Ice for 15 minutes, then take a 15-minute break; maintain this routine for two hours.

Use chamomile.

toothacheThis herb has anti-inflammatory properties, so it can reduce the swelling that’s causing you discomfort. Steep a chamomile tea bag in hot water, then drink it once it reaches room temperature.

Hold the liquid in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing, so the chamomile has direct contact with the affected area. Don’t drink the tea while it’s hot—heat can worsen the inflammation and pain.

Don’t:

Apply aspirin.

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever can be effective at managing the pain. However, you should only take the medication by swallowing it. Don’t crush it and place it directly on the tooth or gums; as the pill dissolves, it’ll burn the gums and cause permanent damage.

Drink anything acidic.

Acidic beverages, like orange juice, coffee, and soda, can over-stimulate the already sensitive toothache. Swap these drinks with water since it’s neutral or milk, as it has a basic pH. Consume the beverages when they’re lukewarm because the tooth may be sensitive to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
