A root canal becomes a necessary procedure when the inner pulp of your tooth becomes inflamed. This dental procedure will save the tooth and keep the infection from spreading. However, the actions you take afterward will make a big difference in preventing pain and ensuring a successful long-term outcome for the treatment. Here’s a closer look at the aftercare essentials—including what to avoid.

Do:

Follow standard dental care practices.

Even when a root canal is followed by a crown, this doesn’t mean your tooth is forever protected against future decay. You’ll still need to continue to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. Using an alcohol-free mouthwash will also help prevent cavities.

However, your dentist may recommend not brushing for a few days after the procedure. In this case, you’ll likely be directed to use a saltwater rinse instead.

Take medications as directed.

root canalIt isn’t unusual to feel some pain or soreness after your root canal. Depending on your expected needs, the dentist will either recommend over-the-counter pain medication or prescribe something a little stronger to address swelling and other issues.

Take these medications as directed. If they don’t seem to be helping, call your dentist to determine what to do next.

Don’t:

Eat hard or chewy foods.

Chewing foods that are hard or tough could be extra painful for your sensitive tooth after the root canal. This could also pull out the temporary crown, exposing the damaged tooth. Avoid such foods until you have a permanent crown put in place.

Chew on the side of the mouth where you just had the surgery.

Because of the increased sensitivity after the procedure, avoid chewing any food on that side of your mouth. For best results, some people choose to consume mostly soft foods, such as applesauce, during the first few days.
