A hot spot (moist dermatitis) is a skin condition commonly diagnosed in dogs. They’re inflamed lesions that may appear on your furry friend’s hips, head, or chest, which should be seen by a veterinarian. In general, hot spots are caused when an irritant is introduced to your pet’s skin. The guide below looks at some of the common offenders.

What Causes Hot Spots on Dogs?

1. Ear Infections & Pyoderma

Ear infections often lead to hot spots. Your pup becomes so irritated by the bacteria or yeast inside their ears that they scratch at the ear and produce hot spots in the same general vicinity—for example, along the neck. Visiting your veterinarian as soon as you suspect an ear infection will prevent this uncomfortable complication.

A similar situation may occur if your dog experiences a skin infection resulting from bacteria or yeast.

2. Poor Grooming

veterinarianIf your four-legged friend has longer hair or fur, they will need to be groomed regularly to prevent matting and tangling. Matted fur retains water and creates the ideal environment for bacteria. Additionally, when irritated by tangles, dogs will scratch and bite at the areas and create hot spots. Beyond preventing this outcome, regular grooming will ensure pests such as mites and fleas don't stay on their skin.

3. Orthopedic Issues

With age, dogs may experience arthritis, hip and back pain, and other orthopedic issues. As a result, your pal might favor lying in one position over another and cause abrasions on bony, high-friction areas such as the hips or ankles. Licking or rubbing at the area leads to hot spots. Similarly, your dog will be tempted to chew at degenerating joints and, with that steady source of friction, cause lesions.

Making sure your dog isn’t overweight and gets plenty of exercise can help prevent arthritis. For those dogs who have this condition already, talk to your veterinarian about anti-inflammatory medications and other solutions for joint pain, such as investing in a supportive dog bed.
