Like all living beings, cats need water to remain in good health. However, many felines don’t feel thirst and forget to drink throughout the day. Some even require care from veterinarians for kidney and urinary tract problems because of chronic dehydration. To help you keep your cat healthy, here are some ways to encourage them to drink more water.

How Can You Keep a Cat Hydrated?

1. Add Moisture to Their Food

If your furry friend refuses to drink water, provide it through their food. Unlike dry food, canned products contain liquids. Switching to or incorporating cans into their diet, especially flavors with gravy, provides more hydration.

To further boost the water content of their wet meal, add a few drops of water to it. You can gradually increase the amount you add as they get used to it.

2. Change Their Bowls

veterinariansSimply changing the type or placement of the container they use may be enough to get them to drink.

Swap their bowls for smaller or larger versions, and pay attention to the ones they seem to like the most. Move their water and food bowls farther apart, and ensure other pets don’t use them. If they like to drink from the glasses on your table, designate one for their use.

3. Try Running Water

If bowls don’t tempt your pet, try switching to a water fountain. Fountains include bowl areas and motors that move water, encouraging some animals to drink. You could even leave a faucet dripping for a few minutes to see if your pet laps it up.
