Whether you’re going to a bigger space across the state, or downsizing to a place just a few blocks away, how you pack the moving boxes matters. Although it’s time-consuming and taxing, if you’re careless about packing, it’ll cause more problems later. Here’s how to save yourself time and protect your valuables.

What Are Some Common Packing Mistakes When Moving?

1. Using One Size for All Items

As convenient as it may be to buy a large quantity of a single size, it’s impractical. When you have heavy objects like dishes, it’s better to pack them in smaller moving boxes. If you only have large boxes, you may feel inclined to fill them up, which would make them too heavy to lift.

Furthermore, these overloaded boxes may not be structurally sound and are likely to fall apart. Invest in a variety of sizes and aim to keep the overall weight below 50 lbs.

2. Not Labeling the Moving Boxes

You can either write down the category, such as “clothing” and “electronics,” or the room. If the contents are fragile, note it on the box.

3. Not Wrapping Items Individually

Always take the time to wrap up and cushion fragile items in the box. While you can use towels and linens along the top, bottom, and sides of the box, use the appropriate material for the actual items, such as bubble wrap, packing paper, packing peanuts, and cardboard dividers.
