A deck serves as an extension of your home and provides a place to relax, entertain friends and family, and enjoy amenities such as outdoor kitchen features. Decks can be created using lumber, concrete, and a few other easy-to-find materials. If building a simple deck is high on your home improvement list, use this guide to get started.

4 Key Steps in the Deck Building Process

1. Call 811 & Make Layout Decisions

Learn where underground utilities are located by calling 811. Get the areas marked before laying the groundwork to avoid utility interference. You’ll also need to check your municipality’s zoning and building permit regulations for legal purposes.

concreteConsider the deck’s use while making layout decisions, such as whether you want to add a fire pit, grill, or outdoor kitchen area. Use string and stakes to mark off the perimeter of where the deck will go.

2. Set the Footings & Piers

Use a power auger to drill into the ground so you can install the concrete piers that will support your deck. At regular intervals, create holes that are 32 inches deep to avoid frost line issues. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the concrete correctly, then use extra dirt to fill in gaps and help fortify the foundation.

3. Build the Frame

Construct the deck frame perimeter. If your deck is more than 16 to 20 feet wide, you will need a center beam that prevents the boards from bending. Center beams are not necessary for smaller decks.

Use pressure-treated 2x lumber for the perimeter beams and secure them together using construction adhesive and 12d nails. Space the nails every 16 inches in a zigzag pattern for extra structural support. Add the beams to the deck perimeter with joist hangers.

4. Install the Decking Material

Once all joists are attached, install either cut pressure-treated wood or cedar beams, which offer natural weather and insect resistance. Drill holes in the beams first before adding the decking screws to avoid cracks. Start at one side and work your way down the frame, leaving quarter-inch gaps between each plank for drainage purposes. Add adhesive to the top of each joist for extra fortification and install handrails for safety purposes.

Wash your hands after working with pressure-treated wood to remove chemical residue.
