You’ll find thick, fluffy Belgian waffles served on breakfast menus around the world because of their unique texture and delicious flavor. This distinct breakfast dish is served a number of ways and has origins dating back to the Middle Ages. Below is a brief guide to their story that you can retell to friends when you dine out next.

When Were Belgian Waffles Created?

The Middle Ages

Waffles have been served since the Middle Ages, and while not yet titled the “Belgian waffle,” these street snacks would have appeared similar. The surplus of barley and oats from harvests allowed venders to sell large, crispy waffles as a cheap on-the-go snack throughout Europe. The first written mention of the Belgian waffle dates back to 1874 and expanded as Belgium became an epicenter for crafting delicious waffles and baked treats.

The World’s Fair

The Brussels waffle was first advertised as the Belgian waffle at Expo 58—a world exposition similar to the World’s Fair—in Brussels, Belgium. It was introduced to the U.S. in 1962 by Belgian Walter Cleyman at the Century 21 Exposition in Seattle. There, it was served with whipped cream and strawberries.

The Belgian waffle was eventually popularized by Belgian Maurice Vermersch at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. Allegedly, he renamed the Brussels waffle the “Bel-Gem waffle” because he feared Americans wouldn’t know where Brussels was. There, they were also served with strawberries and whipped cream.

Variations

Belgian waffles welcome a number of toppings thanks to their deep pockets and sweet, foundational flavor. Since coming to the U.S., people have enjoyed them with butter and maple syrup, caramelized fruit, chocolate fudge sauce, or flavored whipped cream. You can always enjoy them the traditional Belgian way as well with a little bit of butter and powdered sugar.
