Being a pet owner brings daily happiness, but it also requires various responsibilities, from regular checkups with their veterinarian to meeting their nutritional needs. In honor of National Pet Hydration Awareness Month this July, here’s a guide on how to ensure your pet is getting enough water.

What Are the Benefits of Proper Hydration?

Drinking enough water promotes a healthy urinary tract system, so your pet will be at a lower risk of developing urinary tract infections. Proper hydration also helps regulate their body temperature, which is particularly essential during the hot summer months. Not only will your animal have more energy with regular water consumption, but they’ll also be able to heal and recover more readily when sick or injured.

What Are the Signs of Dehydration?

veterinarianIn the early stages of dehydration, you may notice your animal panting and being less energetic. As the dehydration progresses, your pet may have sunken, dry-looking eyes, a dry nose, loss of appetite, and dry, sticky gums.

While mild symptoms of dehydration can be handled at home, a veterinarian should see your pet if they’re refusing to eat or go to the bathroom.

How Can You Keep Your Pet Hydrated?

Most adult cats need between five and 10 ounces of water a day. Dogs need an ounce of water per pound of body weight, so a 20-pound dog would need 20 ounces.

To encourage hydration, have several bowls of water readily available for your pet, both indoors and outdoors. Remember to change the bowls frequently, as fresh water is more appealing.

For especially hot days, treat your pet to some ice cubes, giving them something to chew on that hydrates at the same time. You can also mix water into their food.
