Vinyl records have nostalgic value and make the experience of listening to music more interactive. If you collect LPs, you should take a few precautions when you pack them into moving boxes to prevent damage. Here are a handful of tips on how to keep your belongings well-insulated and scratch-free when you move them.

How to Pack Vinyl Records

1. Use the Right Boxes

moving boxesRecords are 12 inches in diameter. Ensure they fit snugly without room for movement by packing them into reinforced moving boxes or plastic tubs around 14 inches tall.

If the boxes you have available are taller or wider than the records, line their sides and bottoms with styrofoam, bubble wrap, or acid-free packing paper to prevent the items from shifting. Label which side of the box should be up to handle them properly during transportation.

2. Remove Cardboard Jackets

If any records have cardboard jackets, remove these before you pack them. Removing cardboard prevents discs from developing circular imprints when they press against each other in the box. Keep the items in their paper sleeves and place them next to the jackets.

3. Do Not Stack

Stacking LPs puts excess weight on the vinyl, potentially causing warping or cracking. Stand them up vertically in the boxes to minimize pressure and distribute their weight evenly. In the moving truck or your car, keep boxes lined instead of stacked for the same purpose.
