Summer days make spending time out on the water with family and friends fun. However, if your vessel has sat in boat storage during the off-season, you need to take steps to de-winterize it. If you’re preparing to head to the storage facility to get your vehicle, review the checklist below.

How to Your Vessel Out of Boat Storage

1. Inspect the Trailer

First, check the boat hitch for rust. This metal bar connects your vehicle to the trailer so you can haul it. If it’s corroded, you must replace it.

To keep your boat safe on the drive to the marina, use a pressure gauge to check if the trailer tires meet the manufacturer’s pounds per square inch (psi) specifications. If not, refill them using an air pump.

2. Charge the Battery

Test the charge to ensure it’s sufficient before heading out. If not, connect a charger to the terminals and power it up to the recommended levels.

3. Change the Oils

If you didn't top off the fuel and outdrive oil before storing the boat, check their levels. If sediment accumulated, you may need to change these liquids.

Also, check the power steering and coolant levels. The power steering system keeps the boat's trajectory aligned without you having to man the wheel constantly. Coolant prevents the engine from overheating. Top these off if needed.

4. Clean the Vessel

Grab a handheld vacuum to get rid of any accumulated dust in the interior. Use warm, soapy water and a clean sponge to wipe down any vinyl and canvas materials.

You can use the same dish soap and water solution to clean the hull. Use a large, soft sponge to wash the sides and then spray down with a hose.

5. Prepare the Safety Gear

Review the manufacturer’s manual to check your safety gear.

Ensure that you have enough floatation devices for everyone riding the vehicle. You must also carry signaling equipment, including flares and whistles. Finally, check the expiration dates on the fire extinguishers.
