During the warmer months, boat ownership offers opportunities for fun and adventure. Yet, when the winter approaches, you may need boat storage since the waters may become inaccessible. Here are a few best practices for winterization you can use to protect your vehicle before storing it.

Do:

Use antifreeze in the water system.

Even when you drain the boat's water system, there's moisture left behind. When these remnants freeze, they put the lines at risk for ruptures. To avoid damage, treat the system with antifreeze. Just be sure to utilize a product that's safe for drinking water systems.

Cover it up.

Plastic tarps are suitable, but can be blown by strong wind gusts. For that reason, canvas or fitted covers are recommended in climates with extreme winter weather, like Alaska.

Don't:

Leave the batteries in place.

When a battery isn't utilized regularly, the charge drains. Exposure to extremely cold temperatures can also cause this.

As a result, it's best to remove any batteries before leaving your vessel at the boat storage facility. Store these indoors. You can maintain their charges throughout the season by utilizing a trickle charger.

Forget to add a fuel treatment.

Some boats are better stored with a full tank of fuel while others need draining. To find out the right method for your model, check the manufacturer’s manual.

In both situations, fuel treatment is usually necessary to prevent sediment buildup, which could form clogs. If you’re draining the system, first use the fuel treatment and allow it to run for around 10 to 15 minutes.
