RVs promise miles of adventure, but a long-distance move may require you to ship your recreational vehicle. While the prospect of auto shipping may seem daunting, preparing in advance will ensure you not only find the right company to ship your vehicle but also that it arrives at your destination safely. Learn how to prepare your RV for shipping in the guide below.

3 Tips for Shipping an RV

1. Prepare the Interior for Transport

Before auto shipping, remove or store any personal items that you don't want to get lost or damaged during the move. Close cupboards, hatches, and interior doors to prevent them from falling open during transport. If necessary, secure them with masking tape. Unplug or turn off any electrical devices, and disconnect the gas and power supply.

2. Look Into Insurance

Before shipment, contact your transport company and ask about their insurance coverage as well as how to make a claim if needed. Auto transporters are legally required to carry liability insurance, but it’s still wise to contact your insurance provider and ask about adding additional coverage.

3. Perform a Pre-Trip Inspection

At least one day before shipment, perform a full inspection of your RV, making a list of any pre-existing damages, such as dents in the body, scratches in the paint, and broken or missing components. Take time-stamped photos of each issue to help back up your case if you need to file an insurance claim.

In addition to a visual inspection, complete a functional inspection: test the engine, transmission, brakes, signals, tires, and other parts to ensure they're in good working order.
