If you rely on a water well to supply your home with drinking water, regular testing is essential. In between these tests, you may notice signs that the water quality has changed. Here are a few indicators that you may need water treatment to keep your supply clean, safe and operating efficiently.

How to Tell if You Need Water Treatment

1. Changes in Color

It's not abnormal for well water to look slightly cloudy when it's first poured. Give the glass a chance to settle; if the water becomes clear, then there's no problem. However, if it stays milky or foamy, it may be contaminated with bacteria. You may also see a brown, red, or orange color in water that's contaminated with dirt or rust, or an oily film if there has been a spill or leak of chemicals that affected your water supply.

2. Odd Smells & Tastes

Water Treatment A rotten egg smell comes from sulfur, which can be naturally occurring but makes the water unsuitable. If the water has a bitter, fishy, oily, or metallic taste, then the water needs further testing to determine which of many possible contaminants are present.  After treatment, if the water smells like chlorine, you may need to wait a bit longer before it’s safe to drink

3. Clogged Pipes

Over time, if your water has a high mineral content such as magnesium, iron or potassium, this can build up on the walls of your pipes causing low water pressure.

This can not only effect the quality of the water your drinking but also the effectiveness and operation of appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine.
