Most drivers are prepared if they’re in an accident, though often don’t know what to do if they witness one. You can play an important role as a bystander by acting accordingly. Use this guide to ensure you help in every possible way before the towing service arrives.

What to Do When You Witness a Car Wreck

1. Move to Safety

First, make sure you’re in a safe place to help. If a car is on fire, it may be too dangerous for you to get near. If everything seems stable, pull into a parking lot or onto the shoulder—staying 100 feet from the accident site—and turn your hazard lights on.

2. Call 911

towing-cincinnatiIf you suspect a driver is injured, call 911. You don’t want to delay assistance by assuming someone else has contacted EMTs. Let them know where the accident is and what happened and have your phone handy in case they need to contact you. You can let the drivers know assistance is on the way, but don’t help them unless you’re a trained medical professional. You may cause more harm by moving an injured person.

3. Control the Scene

If the drivers need assistance, make sure their vehicles are placed into park, that the emergency brakes are on, and that the keys are out of the ignitions. This will prevent the cars from moving, and if there are leaking fluids, they’re less likely to ignite. You can further protect everyone by setting up flares or traffic cones near the collision, so motorists know to stay away.

4. Give a Statement to the Police

Be ready to give a statement when the police arrive. Explain what you saw, including who was responsible for the collision and any disputes or incidents that took place afterward. If it was a hit-and-run, do your best to recall a license plate, vehicle make and model, and other details to assist. The drivers may also ask for an interview so they can share the details of the accident with the insurance company, or if necessary, to support a personal injury claim in court.
