Metal buildings are a popular choice among commercial businesses, providing a clean-cut appearance and exceptional durability. However, while they naturally resist the elements, these materials aren’t impervious to rust. Rather than risk structural stability, take the following steps to protect your investment.

4 Steps for Dealing With Rust on Metal Buildings

1. Remove Existing Rust

Allowing rust to remain will only cause the issue to worsen. Identify the problem areas and soak a steel brush in vinegar, as the acid will break down the rust and make it easier to remove. Scrub at the surface of the metal until the rust begins to fall away, frequently rinsing the brush in vinegar to loosen the debris.

2. Apply Fresh Paint

The solid barrier that this material creates is completely waterproof and will keep all moisture away from the surface. Allow about two hours for drying before applying the final coat of paint.

3. Pressure Wash Walls

Rust develops when there’s moisture present. Since this is largely due to buildup that occurs from vehicle traffic, outdoor debris, and lack of sunlight, regular pressure washing is essential. The power alone will eliminate the particles and gives the material a chance to dry. Be sure to maintain a slight angle to prevent accidentally blasting off the finish.

4. Secure Pre-Galvanized Material

If the rust has eaten away at the surface of the material, you might be in need of replacement. Ask about pre-galvanized secondary framing before placing the order. It’s a process that coats the surface with zinc, which is known to prevent direct interaction with oxygen or moisture. Installing this on your building will create a tight seal and prevent future problems.
