There comes a point in every vehicle’s life when it’s no longer safe or practical to drive. Once it’s time to upgrade, you must decide what to do with your used car. While you have a few options, one of the most responsible and eco-friendly ways to dispose of it is to scrap it. Here are a few steps to take after you decide to scrap a vehicle.

Do:

Remove all personal belongings.

It’s common for a variety of items to get left inside family cars. As such, check the interior before heading to the scrap yard. Remove any personal belongings, including insurance and registration paperwork. Don’t forget to look in the trunk, glove compartment, center console, and underneath the seats.

Bring the title.

Reputable scrap yards require proof of ownership before agreeing to buy used cars. Have the title when you take the vehicle in. This will transfer the legal authority over the vehicle to the salvage yard and eliminate all responsibility you have for the car. If you can’t find the title, get it replaced at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

Don’t:

Take it apart.

used carSome people attempt to remove parts from their vehicles before scrapping them to sell parts off separately. However, this is not advisable, as there may be rusted and damaged components that are harmful to you and the environment. It’s safer to sell the car as-is so you don’t have to worry about handling electrical parts and corrosive fluids. Scrap yards are better equipped to dispose of substances properly.

Drive it if it’s unsafe.

If your vehicle has damaged components, including transmissions and suspensions, don’t drive it to the scrap yard yourself. Instead, you can have the professionals come tow it from your home. Utilize this service if there are any oil leaks, torn or worn tires, and problems with the brakes.
