Selling a junk car allows you to clear the clutter from your property while making money. However, without proof of ownership, you can’t sell a vehicle to a salvage yard. If you are unable to locate the title for your old vehicle, here’s the process for securing a replacement.

How to Obtain a Vehicle Title in Person

junk carsStop by the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and fill out an application for a replacement title. Be sure to bring a valid photo ID, such as your driver’s license, and a form of identification for the junk car, such as its registration or tag number. If you’re doing this on behalf of someone else, you’ll need a power of attorney form to verify your right to the title.

It could take at least a week before the new document arrives. There’s also a $25 fee. Once the title is created, the DMV will send it to the address on your application.

How to Apply for a Replacement Online

If you own the junk car, you can also apply online. Access Connecticut’s DMV website and fill out an “Application for Replacement Certificate of Title.” Fill out the information and sign the printed sheet.

The state asks that you notarize the request. Include the $25 fee via check or money order and mail the form and payment to the Title Unit of the DMV. Processing for mailed requests may take around 90 days.
