Concrete is known for its strength and durability, but during installation, as it transforms from a liquid state to a solid, or cures, this material requires very specific conditions. If there are issues with the weather during placement, they need to be compensated for by the concrete supplier and construction workers to ensure the material cures properly.

An Introduction to Curing Concrete

How to Mitigate Extreme Temperatures

Ideally, concrete should be cured at about 55°. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible at all times of the year in climates like New York’s. If the weather is too hot, cold, or humid, it can affect the stability of the concrete. It is possible to cure concrete when it’s very cold or very warm. However, you need an experienced concrete supplier who knows the curing techniques to get the job done right.

When it’s very warm, the concrete supplier will use one that doesn’t produce much heat,  and vice versa when it’s cold. The finer the cement, the more heat it creates.

In warm weather, ice or liquid nitrogen is used when curing concrete. Avoid the hottest parts of the day and pour before noon or after it’s dark.

Concrete should never be poured on frozen ground. When it’s freezing out, heaters may be used on the ground until it is warm enough to pour the concrete. You need to closely monitor the temperature of the concrete as it cures to make sure it doesn’t drop below 40°.

The Consequences of Not Curing Correctly

If you don’t ensure the proper conditions for the concrete curing process, you might experience issues with the structural integrity of the concrete, which could reduce its lifespan. When it’s hot outside, the top of any laid concrete dries much faster than the bottom due to the high temperatures and the sun. The top will shrink while the bottom does not, which will result in damaged concrete.
