How CVTs Work

A continuously variable transmission does not feature fixed gears that switch as needed. It relies on a metal chain or belt connected to two variable-diameter pulleys, instead of gears, to provide the vehicle with limitless gear shifting possibilities. One pulley, the input shaft, links to the engine while the other, the output shaft, connects to the drive wheels.

The width of the pulleys changes to accommodate the vehicle’s power needs. If you want to shift to high gear, the driven pulley connecting to the driveshaft (output shaft), widens while the drive pulley (input shaft) connected to the engine narrows. The belt or chain subsequently rides higher on the drive pulley to provide more torque.

However, if you want to shift to low gear, the drive pulley widens while the driveshaft pulley narrows, causing the belt to ride higher on the latter pulley and reduce torque. The input and output pulley ratio changes continuously as the vehicle accelerates or slows down.

transmissionVehicles with CVTs are louder than those with manual or automatic transmissions during acceleration. The engine operates at a continually-high rpm and can subsequently rev at any point. Some drivers do not enjoy this, especially since the noises mimic slipping clutches, which alarms those used to conventional transmission systems. A car with a CVT can also seem slower because it gradually gains power instead of creating power surges from “flooring it.”

Despite the disadvantages, the CVT provides fast, efficient acceleration perfect for small engines such as four-cylinder engines. The efficiency the part provides avoids small engine stress while simultaneously maximizing fuel efficiency. This is because it continuously accommodates power changes, which also results in fewer emissions.
