Dry eye is not only uncomfortable, but it can also cause vision problems. A lack of moisture will leave your eyesight blurry, making everyday tasks like reading and driving difficult. Luckily, there are steps you can take to alleviate the strain.

4 Steps You Can Take to Avoid Dry Eye

1. Create an Anti-Dry-Eye Environment

Avoid air blowing into your eyes—for example, from heating systems to hairdryers—as this causes moisture on the surface of the eye to evaporate. Installing a humidifier in your home will add dampness to indoor air, which can get especially dry in winter thanks to heating.

2. Use Eye Drops

3. Protect Against Wind

Like hot air, wind causes moisture on the eye's surface to evaporate, exacerbating dry eye. Wear sunglasses when you go outside to shield your eyes. Wrap-around models are ideal, as they also keep the wind from coming in at the sides of the face.

4. Take Breaks From Screens

When you stare at a phone, tablet, or computer screen, you’re likely forget to blink. Blinking helps produce moisture. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: pause every 20 minutes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. You can also blink rapidly to produce moisture.
