Equipment rental is an excellent solution when you temporarily need heavy machinery. However, without consistently using the equipment, you or your crew may need a refresher on safety. By keeping some safety tips in mind—especially when you’re using bulldozers, forklifts, excavators, backhoes, and drilling machines—you can complete your project efficiently and without any trouble.

How to Stay Safe While Using Equipment Rentals

1. Inspect Regularly

At the beginning of every workday, inspect the equipment rental to ensure that everything is working without a problem. For example, check for damage in the undercarriage or leaks in the hydraulic hose. Replenish the oil and other fluids if necessary. Don’t let anyone use the machines until you know they’re ready.

2. Prioritize Communication

Encourage everyone to keep two-way radios on and in close proximity at all times. That way, if any problems or questions come up, it’s easy to ensure that the right people are aware. Keep a pack of fresh batteries on-hand as well.

3. Drive Defensively

Emphasize the importance of drivers checking their blind spots frequently as well, and have spotters guide the drivers in tricky areas where visibility is limited. Never let anyone drive without a seat belt on.

4. Practice Good Loading Technique

When loading and unloading cargo, make sure the ground is leveled to prevent toppling over or sliding uncontrollably. Note any warnings or instruction manuals that tell you how much weight a machine can hold, and never load anything exceeding that weight. When an object is loaded, check that it’s firmly attached and secured by rigging.

5. Prevent Injury

Make sure that each machine is completely powered off and locked when dismounting. This will reduce the chances of any stored and unused energy from hurting someone who is getting off the machine or performing maintenance.
