There are plenty of reasons why repurposing furniture is a smart investment of both your time and money. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it also adds a rustic charm to your home. It can be beneficial to get creative, and there are more options than you would think! Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

How to Repurpose Furniture

1. Turn a Side-Drawer into a Planter

If you have an old side-drawer, bring it to the backyard and plant something inside of it! Use some coats of outdoor spraypaint and line the drawer with garbage bags. Drill some holes at the bottom of the drawer for drainage. Then, fill the drawer with dirt and plant your favorite flower.

2. Add an Old Headboard to a Bench

If you have a backless wooden bench – either for inside or outside decoration – you can attach a headboard from an old bed to serve as the back. It will require some drilling, but you can make the process quicker by using a pocket hole jig. If the measurements of the bench and the headboard don't quite line up, you may have to do some sawing to make the headboard fit the bench.

3. Use an Old Dresser as an Island

furniture Cincinnati, OHIf you need some extra counter space or storage in your kitchen, you can convert an old dresser into a kitchen island. You'll need to start by removing the dresser top, which typically involves releasing some nails and screws. Then, you can measure out some new material – often wood or granite – and screw it to the top to serve as the counter. After some sanding, you can either keep the original color or repaint it to go with the color scheme of your kitchen.

4. Turn a Rocking Chair into a Swing

If you have an old rocking chair, you can turn it into a swing! Saw off the legs before drilling four small holes – two on the armrests, two on the top of the backrest – and screwing in bolts. Attach some S-hooks to the bolts that a thick rope or chain can thread through, and then tie the chair to a thick, sturdy branch. For safety, make sure that both the chair and the tree branch can withstand a lot of weight.
