1. Coolant

Your engine generates a lot of heat to power your car. Your radiator's coolant or antifreeze then keeps your vehicle's temperature in check, drawing out heat as it flows through the engine. 

Letting your coolant level drop can lead to overheating, which can do major harm to your engine. At the very least, make sure your coolant is topped off before leaving, but for the best results, have your radiator and antifreeze quality checked out by a professional. 

2. Tire Depth & Pressure

Your wheels will be working hard during your long drive. To minimize risks of flat tires and blowouts, inspect your tires a day or two ahead of your trip.

Check the tread depth as well. Most tires have wear indicators or cross ribs at the bottom of the grooves. Replace tires with tread depths below 1.6 mm (2/32").

3. Brake Pads

If you hear screeching or grinding noises when pressing down on the brake pedal, it's a sign you need new pads or you’ve worn out some of the supporting components.
