Even minor problems with your boat can interfere with your time on the water. Therefore, preventative maintenance is essential, as is addressing issues immediately when they surface. Below are some of the most common boat repair issues and how to avoid them.

A Guide to Boat Repair Problems & How to Prevent Them

1. Overheating

Some boats have an audible overheat alarm, while others do not. For those, you need to keep an eye on the engine temperature gauge, or extended overheating can cause catastrophic damage. The most common causes of overheating are a blocked or failing intake pump, or bad impeller. Keep the inlet(s) clear of silt, weeds, and other marine debris. Also, before heading out, give the pump a quick visual check to make sure it is drawing in water.  Use a motor flusher (ear muffs) to run the engine when it’s not in the water.  Running dry can immediately cause damage.

2. Failure to Start

Boat repair in Vermilion, OHIt can be concerning when you turn the ignition and your boat engine fails to start. However, don't panic. It could be something simple. Check fuel levels. Make sure to engage the choke if there is one, and try again to start. Check fuses. If this doesn't work, make sure the fuel lines are not kinked or pinched, and check the fuel filter and screens for clogs. If you have a primer bulb, make sure fuel is flowing.  If all else fails, it may be time for professional boat repair.

3. Dead Battery

If, when you try to start your boat, you only hear a series of clicks—or just silence—the problem is likely a dead battery. This frequently happens because boats in the Great Lakes region spend a good part of the year unused and out of the water. If it's the battery, none of your electrical accessories will work, either. A jump may recharge it, but it's probably time for a new battery. Attach a trickle-charger when not in use. This will extend the battery life and prevent this type of nasty surprise.  Don’t leave batteries in the cold, they can freeze.
