The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) makes it illegal to discriminate against a person based on disability. Part of this law requires businesses to have ADA-compliant signage and website content that helps make their services accessible for everyone. If you own or manage a business, use this helpful FAQ to learn more about what the ADA requires.

A Business Owner’s Guide to ADA Compliance

What ADA-compliant signage do you need?

According to the ADA, your commercial property must include signage that clearly designates permanent areas of any space that is open to the public. These can include handicapped parking spots, restrooms, staircases, elevators, and fire exits.

What grade braille so signs need?

ADA compliant signageAll text on ADA signage must include grade 2 braille. Letters should remain lowercase, with the exception of proper nouns. Use a translation software to ensure accuracy and a braille dot spacing and sizing chart to ensure legal tactile legibility.

Where should you mount the signs?

Mount your ADA signage on the latch side of the door to the designated area. Signs should hang at a minimum of 48 inches from the floor and a maximum of 60 inches. Do not install ADA signage directly onto doors.

Are there any font restrictions?

Some sans serif fonts that meet ADA guidelines include Helvetica, Futura, Trebuchet, Verdana, and Franklin Gothic. All letters should appear in uppercase. Work with a professional signage company to determine the correct font size for the width of the sign.
