An all-terrain vehicle is an purchase to make, especially if you love the great outdoors. If you’re considering purchasing a used ATV, there are a few factors to keep in mind. From knowing the value to checking out details like the tires, here are five things to consider when making the purchase.

What to Consider When Buying a Used ATV

1. Get the Price

Compare the seller’s price for the ATV to the retail value. The seller’s price should be lower than the retail price, but take into account how old it is and how many miles it has traveled. If the vehicle is older than 15 years or has too many miles, it may not be worth the money. Also, consider any missing or broken parts you will need to pay when comparing prices.

2. Inspect the Oil & Coolant

Check the engine oil’s color and consistency. If it is black or too thick, the oil is old, or water has gotten inside. If water has gotten inside, check the engine for any damage that could’ve caused water to get inside. Also, look at the overfill area of the coolant to ensure there’s no dirt or debris mixed in. The coolant should be neon green or pink; any other color should be avoided.

tires3. Look at the Tires

Worn tires are not necessarily a bad thing when looking at used ATVs. If the treads look too low, you may be able to use this as a negotiating tool for a lower price. You can then purchase new tires or head to a salvage yard to find quality used parts for your new toy.

4. Inspect the Body

Bring a flashlight and walk around the ATV to check for cracks, missing parts, and other damage. Check the CV boots that connect the axles to the wheels and ensure there is no tearing. Look at the frame for bends, breaks, dents, or rust. Don’t forget to test every button for functionality and sit in the seat. If the seat feels heavy, it may be waterlogged.

5. Observe the Airbox

If there is engine oil in the airbox, there may be a problem with the engine. It may also indicate that repairs may have been made incorrectly, and oil is now leaking inside. Don’t buy an ATV that has debris in the airbox.
