Puppy training needs to be done immediately once they’re home. If neglected, they will persist in bad habits. A people-friendly puppy will be comfortable and relaxed around strangers and won’t bark at passersby unless they feel threatened. Use these tips to introduce your dog to new people.

3 Ways to Train a People-Friendly Puppy

1. Socialize Them

Puppies shouldn’t leave home until they’ve received all their shots, or they could become ill or catch flees. Vets recommend waiting 10-14 days after their last vaccination booster, which happens at three to four months old. Since they can’t socialize outdoors, start bringing friends and family around when they’re eight weeks old.

Starting as early as possible can help them be comfortable around others, and at eight weeks, they begin to understand the smells of different people. After they’re up to date on all shots, you can continue to socialize them on walks or through professional puppy training.

2. Train Them to Respect People

Puppy trainingDuring the critical socialization period (four to seven weeks), teach your puppy respect for other people. Your friends can help with this process by offering treats like kibble and pets when they enter your home. However, when the puppy is showing bad socialization behaviors, like barking or jumping up, use verbal commands if they’ve learned them.

Say a definite and verbal “No” with a stern tone. If they haven’t learned commands, tell your friend not to respond to the bad behavior by ignoring them. To help with their energy levels when they meet new people, play a few rounds of catch inside before meeting your friends.

3. Reward Good Behavior

Never reward bad behavior and always reward proper socialization etiquette. Reinforce good behavior through treats, pets, and positive words with a happy, high pitched tone. Negative reinforcement should be used with a gentle hand as a form of correction, like pushing the dog’s bottom down to sit and releasing it once they do.
