Heavy rainfall will not only prevent you from taking a relaxing dip after a tiring day, but it also affects your pool as well. From the chemical changes in pool water to floating debris, pool maintenance is necessary on a rainy day. If you want to know more about how rain influences your swimming pool and how you can help, here are three rainy day pool care tips to check.

How to Take Care of Your Pool on a Rainy Day

1. Add an Algaecide

Rain increases the phosphorus and nitrogen levels in your pool. These substances encourage the growth of algae and bacteria, contaminating the water. To prevent an algae outbreak, add an algaecide before the rainy season starts. The chemicals in the algaecide will fend off algae forming in the water, leaving your pool clean and safe to swim.

2. Remove Any Debris

Pool MaintenanceDepending on what kind of flora surrounds your pool, a storm will bring various debris, dirt, leaves, branches, or other waste into it. Start with a leaf net to skim off all the debris that is floating on top of the water. Use a slow vacuum to remove the remaining waste and finish it with a good old broom to clean your deck and the area around your pool.

3. Drain Your Pool After a Storm

If a major storm brings heavy rainfall into your pool after everything settles down, check the pool water levels. Often, it will rise considerably, overwhelming the pool’s filtration system. Fix the issue with a bit of pool maintenance. Attach the backwash hose and turn on the water pump with the settings on “Backwash.” Stop the pump when the water levels lower around the middle of your skimmer. Turn off the pump and let your pool filtration system do its job, with the proper amount of water in the pool.
