Proper maintenance is essential to prolonging the life of your HVAC unit and keeping down the cost of your energy bills. It’s also an important part of making sure that the air in your home is both comfortable and clean. Below are three tips you can follow to keep your unit in top shape as spring approaches.

How to Prepare Your HVAC Unit for Spring

1. Clear the Drain Hole

As your unit functions, it removes excess moisture from the air. This moisture exits the unit through its drain line. However, if this condensation is trapped and builds up in your unit, it can damage the electronic parts of your unit or cause extensive water damage in your home, possibly leading to mold growth.

One issue that can disrupt a drain line is a clogged drain hole. The drain hole, which is usually found at the base of the cabinet, can be clogged by dirt, debris, insects, and mold or mildew. If your unit’s drain hole is clogged, try to poke through it with a paper clip or similar object to break up and remove any obstructions.

2. Change the Filter

hvacChange or clean your filter every 30 to 90 days, depending on what your filter’s manufacturer recommends. A clean filter traps dust and other irritating or harmful particles, like pet dander, and prevents them from circulating in your home’s air. However, filters become dirty and ineffective over time, adversely affecting the air quality of your home as well as also the energy efficiency of your unit. This is because a dirty filter restricts airflow, which means your unit has to run for longer and use more electricity to maintain temperatures.

3. Clean Around It

Debris is likely to build up around your unit during fall and winter. Leaves, branches, and dirt may have collected around it. Additionally, plants or bushes may have grown around it. Remove these obstructions, and keep standing vegetation at least two feet away. You’ll want to make sure that your unit has enough space to be able to pull in enough of the surrounding air; obstructions can restrict airflow, resulting in higher energy bills.
