Temperature changes and moisture cause potholes to form on asphalt driveways and roads. Drivers must try to avoid these holes whenever possible to prevent damage to a range of auto parts. To help you stay safe after impact, here are a few areas to inspect if you drove over a pothole.

How Can Potholes Damage Your Car?

1. Suspension

The suspension makes up the underside of your vehicle. Hitting potholes at high speeds or going over a deep one may cause the undercarriage to come in contact with the road, harming the shocks or struts.

If this auto part is damaged, you may notice the vehicle pulling to one side or vibrating as you drive.

2. Tires

auto parts Livingston County NYTires take the brunt of the impact when you drive over a pothole.

While they are designed to absorb shock, jagged pieces of asphalt can puncture them and leave you stranded with a flat. Some tire treads separate from the sidewalls upon impact, making the rubber more vulnerable to damage.

3. Wheels

If the tire becomes flat, the wheel can sustain cracks or become bent.

Wheels with these deformities won’t roll straight, often pulling at the steering wheel and making it difficult to maintain your positioning. Deformed wheels may also not form airtight seals with the tires, making these more likely to suddenly come off while you drive.

4. Exhaust Systems

Exhaust pipes sit underneath the car and stick out from the back bumper. When drivers go over deep potholes, contact with the ground can dent the tailpipes, catalytic converters, or mufflers.

Damaged pipes can endanger those in the vehicle by funneling carbon monoxide into the cabin. If the tailpipe is damaged, you may need towing to safely move your vehicle even if you can still drive it.
