As it’s difficult to base a busy schedule around the local weather report, sometimes driving in the rain is unavoidable. The slick roadways and decreased visibility can make driving conditions dangerous, however, which is why motorists should take precautions when behind the wheel. To avoid the need for collision repair, below are tips to get to your destination safely.

How to Drive in Rainy Weather

1. Watch Speed

Speeding is one reason why many motorists need collision repairs after rainstorms. At speeds that exceed 35 miles per hour, it’s possible for the car to hydroplane. This means that the tires lift off the pavement and start gliding on the water on top of it, increasing the risk of an accident.

If this happens, slowly lift your foot off the gas pedal while steering straight ahead. If the car is spinning, turn the wheel slowly in the direction of the movement. Replacing bald tires to improve traction, turning off cruise control, and driving at slower speeds will reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

2. Turn on Headlights & Wipers

Replacing the blades a few times a year and cleaning them with washer fluid will ensure they work when you need them to. The sky is often overcast when it rains, which is why motorists are required by law to turn on headlights to improve visibility, too.

3. Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Tailgating in treacherous weather is the cause of many fender benders, too. Your reaction time could be greatly compromised during a downpour. If the car ahead brakes suddenly, the tailgater will have limited response time to avoid an accident. That’s why you should keep a following distance of at least a car and a half between you and the vehicle ahead.
