Your HVAC system needs regular maintenance to keep it in working order, and part of the reason is the buildup of dust and debris as air is circulated through your home. Certain components of furnaces are particularly prone to getting dirty. During routine maintenance sessions, your technician will clean the following to help ensure maximum performance and energy efficiency.

Which Parts of a Furnace Need to Be Cleaned?

1. Filter

A dirty filter will affect the air quality in your home and the ease with which your system operates. When it becomes clogged with accumulated dust, the furnace has to work twice as hard to operate the home’s airflow, meaning the efficiency of the unit will decrease.

Replace your disposable air filter or clean a permanent filter once per season. If you have longhaired pets that shed or family members with respiratory issues, once every six weeks is recommended.

2. Ignition

The type of ignition depends on the energy your furnace uses to produce heat. The pilot light in a gas appliance and an electrical ignition both become dirty over time, which makes it difficult for them to heat up safely. If grime and dust are allowed to accumulate without cleaning, it could cause the system to not start at all.

3. Coils

HVACThe furnace coil works with the combustion chamber to drive the heat throughout the system. When coils are dirty, they won’t push air properly out of the vents. As with other dirty parts, this reduces the effectiveness and efficiency of your HVAC system.

4. Burner

When the burners are dirty, the heat won’t burn evenly or at the right height, which will produce less warmth. Neglecting to clean the burner in your HVAC system could be dangerous. Flames that burn incompletely in a gas furnace will create more poisonous carbon monoxide in your system, which will be pushed out of your vents into your home.
